My experience at BSC Fusion Group

My name is Ruth Mora Soto and during last summer I was working in my high school research project in an internship at the Fusion Group (CASE) in Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

As part of BSC´s second promotion of Bojos per la Supercomputació, I was fortunate to count on BSC support in my “Treball de Recerca” (TR), a compulsory research project at the end of my secondary studies. As Fusion was an area I had always appealed, I decided to take advantage of such project to deepen into it. Therefore, I was put in contact with the Fusion group and had the opportunity to do an internship in there in order to carry out my TR.

47th EPS Plasma Physics conference moves online

More than three years ago, Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) was chosen as the Local Organizer (LOC) for the 47th European Physical Society (EPS) Conference on Plasma Physics on June 22-26, 2020, in Sitges, Spain. In April 2020, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the LOC together with the EPS Plasma Physics Division Board and the Programme Committee came to the conclusion that it is best to postpone the conference by one year to June 21-25, 2021.

Unfortunately, the outbreak is still on-going, and we have reluctantly had to conclude that it is not possible to deliver an in-person event in Sitges in June 2021. This decision reflects concerns and uncertainties arising from the present public health situation, which will inevitably affect all aspects of conference organization and travel on the relevant timescale.

The conference together with its satellite meeting will take place online. The dates of the conference remain unchanged: 21-25 June 2021. Please find our joint official announcement below which is also available on the conference web site.

Figure 1. Launch of the 1st Spanish Fusion HPC Workshop

On November 27th, the 1st Spanish Fusion HPC Workshop (link to full programme and abstracts) was organized online by our Fusion group and Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in close collaboration with the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) and experts from several collaborator institutes.  A total of 182 registered attendants interested in the modelling in fusion met in this online event which delved both into the overall progress and challenges of High Performing Computing (HPC) applied to large scale fusion projects such as ITER or EUROfusion, and into specific research on most types of fusion phenomena simulations (energy and particle transport, fast particles, multi-physics, plasma, deep learning, materials micro-structure, preconditioning, HPC systems resources and transferability across HPC systems, etc.).
