Barcelona Supercomputing Center has hosted the final EUROfusion Code Camp of 2019 from the 9th to 13th of December at the Diagonal-Nord Campus of UPC. With its 33 participants from various research units around Europe, the Code Camp has given the EUROfusion Work Package on Code Development (WPCD) an excellent setting to continue its collaborative efforts to push forward integrated modelling in fusion. Moreover, it served as a forum to discuss the coming EU Framework Programme FP9 which will bring significant changes and restructuring to EUROfusion with a new E-TASC programme including Advanced Computing Hubs (ACHs).

Fusion for Energy visits MareNostrum
Around 60 people from Fusion for Energy visited the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) last week. The visit was organized by the Fusion for Energy Staff Committee in collaboration with the BSC Communications team. The visit included a tour of the MareNostrum supercomputer hosted at BSC.
Visit to Poznań to push forward HPC capabilities for fusion
In the frame of his three-year EUROfusion Engineering Grant (2018-2020), our group member Albert Gutiérrez has visited the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSCN), Poland, from the 14th to 18th of October. During his visit Albert worked closely with the EUROfusion Core Programming Team (CPT) member Tomasz Żok on the performance and integration of fusion codes on virtualized environments.
PhD dissertation of Allah Rakha on Alfvénic instabilities
We are delighted to announce that our group member Allah Rakha has been granted with the title of PhD in physics after successfully defending his dissertation entitled “Analysis of energetic particle-driven Alfvénic instabilities in tokamak and stellarator plasmas using three dimensional numerical tools”.
The evaluation board was composed by five members from five universities and research centers, i.e. EPFL (Switzerland), Ghent University (Belgium), Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), UC3M (Spain) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC, Spain), to meet the requirement of his co-tutelle PhD programme at Ghent University and UPC. The defence itself took place on September 27, 2019 at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona (Spain).
Innovation and economical opportunities in Fusion
Last Tuesday the 11th edition of KIMconference took place at the L’Auditori Cuatrecasas in Barcelona. With the title “KIMconference2019 Tangibilizando la innovación“, the event attracted entrepreneurs, politicians, private and public sector including fusion experts to discuss and learn about innovation.
The conference had a dedicated section in the field of fusion energy. The first talk of this section was given by Dr Carlos Hidalgo from CIEMAT. He introduced the topic of fusion to the audience and the great scientific and technological challenges that have to be overcome in the coming years. In the second talk, Dr Victor Sáez from Fusion for Energy focused on the contracts won by European companies for the ITER construction. So far, about 6.000M€ have been invested on contracts and about 2.000M€ more will be spent in the coming years.
WPCD Code Camp at Innsbruck with Gloria Falchetto
This week, WPCD developers from all around EUROfusion countries have met at Innsbruck, Austria, in the last WPCD code camp of 2018. 37 participants have been working on various activities, all of them aligned towards the European integrated modelling efforts. Discussions have been carried out in the integration of codes within the IMAS (Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite) ant ITM aiming to bring together codes from fusion research centers.
