The first online session of the Artificial Intelligence Mapping Workshop organized by Fusion for Energy (F4E) took place on 8 April 2025. The aim of the event is to establish a joint European effort to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the various work streams for fusion.
In particular, after a comprehensive general introduction to AI, four parallel streams were identified and presented:
- AI for manufacturing, non-destructive testing (NDT) and assembly
- AI for material development
- AI for plasma science and control
- AI for design and simulation
Later, the attendees had the opportunity to follow more specific talks regarding these topics in separate parallel sessions.
Several team members from the BSC Fusion group joined this inauguration online event, along with staff from ITER, EUROfusion, European academic institutions, and companies active in the field.
It was inspiring to see how AI can be applied to practical challenges to develop Nuclear Fusion as a new source of energy, for example: in the manufacturing needed for the poloidal magnetic field, in digital modeling of materials, in modeling instabilities and supporting the control in real-time, and in helping the design of nuclear fusion devices.
Moreover, the occasion was a great opportunity to be updated on the ongoing works in Europe and establish a network with potential new partners. We look forward to attending the second part of the workshop in Barcelona, which will be held in person on May 26 and 27, 2025.
