Our Fusion group member Carles Riera took part in the PlasmaSurf Summer School 2016, held in Oeiras (Portugal) from 10-15 July, 2016. There he had a chance to learn about Plasma Physics and Lasers from several professors lecturing at Instituto de Plasmas e Fusao Nuclear.
Apart from the theoretical classes and various outdoor activities, the students had the chance to visit the ISTTOK tokamak and the Laboratory for Intense Lasers.
Our fusion research group was delighted to host Dr Donald A. Spong from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) during his visit to Barcelona Supercomputing Center from the 1st to the 6th of July 2016.
The BSC Fusion group has attended this week, from 4 to 8 July 2016, the 43rd European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics in Leuven, Belgium. It is the largest annual conference in the field of plasma physics and controlled fusion in Europe.

Last Tuesday 28/06/2016, our fusion group member Dani Gallart received one of the prestigious grants from “La Caixa” in order to support his PhD studies at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
The ceremony was hosted at the Caixa Fòrum of Barcelona presided by Jaume Giró, General Director of “La Caixa” Foundation Bank, Carmen Vela, Secretary of State of Research, and Jordi Portabella, director of Research and Knowledge of “La Caixa”.
Dani was accompanied at the ceremony by Prattya Datta, another winner of the 2015 edition from BSC, Prof. Mateo Valero, Director of BSC, and Merce Calvet, Head of BSC Management Department.
The call to send in proposals for the next round of EUROfusion Researcher Grants has been published. The deadline is 8 September 2016, and the start date of the grant of the succesful candidates is no later than on the 30 June 2017.
The action supports the initial training of researchers, typically during the first years of their careers in research. It is directed towards researchers of all nationalities, who meet the following criteria:

On June 7-9, the BSC researchers Georg Huhs, Stephan Mohr and Mervi Mantsinen from the CASE department participated in a EUROfusion meeting on fusion materials. Their presentation on Recent advances in large-scale atomistic materials modeling at Barcelona Supercomputer Center was well received. The meeting was organized by Prof. María José Caturla at the University of Alicante, Spain.
Materials research is a key topic for the European and worldwide fusion research programme as the technological feasibility of fusion energy depends on the availability of materials that are capable of withstanding the operational conditions of fusion reactors.
