The session, titled <em data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"671\">\u201cIntegrating Fusion into the EU Energy Roadmap,\u201d<\/em> brought together leading voices from research, industry, and policy to discuss Europe\u2019s evolving role in the global fusion energy landscape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"1032\">The panel was moderated by <strong data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"858\">Zainab Gilani<\/strong> (Cleantech Group) and included <strong data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"909\">Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong> (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), <strong data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"966\">Richard Kembleton<\/strong> (Gauss Fusion), and <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1011\">Pierre-Yves Chaffard<\/strong> (Fusion for Energy).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1099\"><strong data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1099\">Strong interest in fusion across the cleantech community<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1480\">Fusion attracted significant attention among Forum participants, many of whom come from the energy, climate tech, industrial manufacturing, and investment communities. This reflects a clear trend: fusion is increasingly recognised not only as a long-term clean energy solution, but as an important driver for innovation across materials science, manufacturing, several key themes:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1640\"><strong data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1640\">1) Europe\u2019s unique position in fusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1694\">Europe benefits from a rare combination of strengths:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1806\">Decades of world-leading research at facilities such as <strong data-start=\"1753\" data-end=\"1760\">JET<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1762\" data-end=\"1779\">ASDEX Upgrade<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1804\">Wendelstein 7-X<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"1916\">The world\u2019s largest collaborative fusion project, <strong data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"1867\">ITER<\/strong>, with a highly capable industrial supply chain<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"2020\">A growing ecosystem of private fusion companies such as <strong data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"1991\">Gauss Fusion<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2018\">Renaissance Fusion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2023\" data-end=\"2140\">A coordinated research framework via <strong data-start=\"2060\" data-end=\"2074\">EUROfusion<\/strong>, supported by advanced computing infrastructures like <strong data-start=\"2129\" data-end=\"2140\">EuroHPC<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2304\">This places Europe in a strong position to shape the future of fusion energy \u2014 provided that scientific, industrial, and investment communities work hand in hand.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2306\" data-end=\"2372\"><strong data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2372\">2) Digital acceleration: HPC, AI and multiphysics simulations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2373\" data-end=\"2542\">A central point of the discussion was the accelerating role of <strong data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2472\">high-performance computing (HPC)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2474\" data-end=\"2480\">AI<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2486\" data-end=\"2512\">multiphysics modelling<\/strong> in advancing fusion research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2653\">Dr. Mantsinen highlighted that modern fusion development is increasingly a <strong data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2652\">digital engineering challenge<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-start=\"2657\" data-end=\"2769\">AI-assisted plasma control is already being tested at existing tokamaks to predict and mitigate instabilities.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2772\" data-end=\"2886\">Machine learning is accelerating analysis of large experimental datasets and helping optimise heating scenarios.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"3038\">Digital twins are emerging as a pathway to test reactor designs, optimise performance, and reduce the cost and risk of future demonstration plants.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3041\" data-end=\"3213\">Advanced simulations allow scientists to model plasma behaviour, energetic particle dynamics, and material responses under extreme conditions before experimental execution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3342\">These capabilities significantly shorten development cycles and help de-risk future large-scale projects such as ITER and DEMO.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3344\" data-end=\"3404\"><strong data-start=\"3348\" data-end=\"3404\">3) Key challenges and the role of enabling technologies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3510\">The panel also discussed cross-cutting challenges that require collaboration beyond the fusion community:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-start=\"3513\" data-end=\"3588\"><strong data-start=\"3513\" data-end=\"3555\">High-temperature superconductors (HTS)<\/strong> for compact high-field magnets<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3658\"><strong data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3613\">Advanced materials<\/strong> to withstand neutron loads and heat fluxes<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3658\"><strong data-start=\"3661\" data-end=\"3689\">Manufacturing innovation<\/strong>, including precision machining, robotics, and additive manufacturing<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3658\"><strong data-start=\"3763\" data-end=\"3794\">Long-term investment models<\/strong> suited to complex, multi-decadal energy technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3851\" data-end=\"3973\">These enabling technologies represent significant opportunities for European industry and investors over the coming years.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3975\" data-end=\"4027\"><strong data-start=\"3979\" data-end=\"4027\">4) Collaboration across disciplines and sectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4028\" data-end=\"4127\">All panelists emphasized that the next phase of fusion development depends on strong collaboration:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-start=\"4130\" data-end=\"4187\">Between <strong data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4185\">research institutions and private companies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4190\" data-end=\"4248\">Across <strong data-start=\"4197\" data-end=\"4246\">computing, materials science, and engineering<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4251\" data-end=\"4291\">Between <strong data-start=\"4259\" data-end=\"4291\">European and global partners<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4293\" data-end=\"4487\">At BSC, the Fusion Group contributes to this through the <strong data-start=\"4350\" data-end=\"4387\">EUROfusion Advanced Computing Hub<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"4393\" data-end=\"4414\">FusionCAT project<\/strong>, and active collaborations with ITER and other international programmes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92918\" recognition that fusion is not only a scientific challenge, but a broader innovation ecosystem where Europe can lead globally, combining scientific excellence with industrial capability and advanced
