{"id":92609,"date":"2025-05-21T15:58:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/?p=92609"},"modified":"2025-05-21T15:58:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:58:50","slug":"fusion-group-contributions-at-the-bsc-doctoral-symposium-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/index.php\/2025\/05\/21\/fusion-group-contributions-at-the-bsc-doctoral-symposium-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Fusion Group contributions at the BSC Doctoral Symposium 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-91992 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/12thds_bannerwlogos.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From May 6<sup>th<\/sup> to 8<sup>th<\/sup>, two members of our Fusion group,<strong> Pau Manyer<\/strong> and <strong>Hern\u00e1n Domingo<\/strong>, <strong>participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsc.es\/education\/predoctoral-phd\/doctoral-symposium\/12th-international-bsc-severo-ochoa-doctoral-symposium-2025\">12th International BSC Severo Ochoa Doctoral Symposium 2025<\/a><\/strong>, presenting the latest progress and results of their ongoing projects. This event provides an opportunity for MSc and PhD students, as well as early postdoctoral scientists, to present their research projects in either oral or poster format. This edition saw more than 40 participants from a variety of backgrounds disseminate their research topics and achievements.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the first day, Pau presented the recent advances he has made in developing the<strong> EQUILI<\/strong> module within the <strong>Alya4Fusion<\/strong> project. The project&#8217;s goal is to create a <strong>new high-performance computing numerical tool<\/strong> capable of simulating various physical phenomena and mechanical processes that occur in nuclear fusion reactors. Built on the <strong>multiphysics finite element solver Alya<\/strong>, this code is designed for use on the <strong>MareNostrum 5 supercomputer<\/strong> and aims to assist engineers and physicists in <strong>designing the next generation of tokamaks and stellarators<\/strong>. These devices are key to the <strong>industrialisation and commercialisation of fusion energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>EQUILI computes the equilibrium configuration in axisymmetric plasma systems<\/strong> (i.e. tokamaks). The most recent work focuses on improving the treatment of vacuum vessel walls, implementing a high-order approximation for the plasma boundary and using the ghost stabilisation method to improve accuracy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92631\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92631\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0056-scaled-e1747825308705-400x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0056-scaled-e1747825308705-400x243.jpg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0056-scaled-e1747825308705-1024x623.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0056-scaled-e1747825308705-1536x934.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0056-scaled-e1747825308705-2048x1246.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pau giving his talk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On May 8<sup>th<\/sup>, <strong>Hern\u00e1n<\/strong> presented the latest developments in <strong>EMWAVE<\/strong> (formerly MAXWEL), <strong>a full-wave frequency domain solver that uses FEM<\/strong>. Since last year&#8217;s symposium, many improvements have been made to the code. Most importantly, new meshes have been included, including those resembling a <strong>tokamak<\/strong> cross-section, and finite sources representing antennas can now be implemented. The code has also been integrated into the Alya framework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like EQUILI, EMWAVE is also a module of Alya4Fusion, which is used to<strong> simulate the dynamics inside a fusion reactor on the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer<\/strong> at BSC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92027\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92027\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92027\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0420-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"494\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hern\u00e1n explaining his poster.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the presentations by Pau and Hern\u00e1n, our senior researchers, <strong>Dani Gallart and Alejandro Soba<\/strong>, contributed to the collaborative spirit of this interdisciplinary event by acting as chairman and reviewer, respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From May 6th to 8th, two members of our Fusion group, Pau Manyer and Hern\u00e1n Domingo, participated in the 12th International BSC Severo Ochoa Doctoral Symposium 2025, presenting the latest progress and results of their ongoing projects.
