Credits: UNED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From April 7<sup>th<\/sup> through 10<sup>th<\/sup>, Fusion Group Researcher <strong>Ezequiel Goldberg<\/strong> participated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tecfir.uned.es\/NeutronicsMeeting.html\"><strong>Fusion Neutronics Meeting 2025: ITER and beyond<\/strong><\/a>, organised this year by the <strong>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/tecfir.uned.es\/\">Tecnolog\u00edas de Fisi\u00f3n, Fusi\u00f3n y Fuentes de Irradiaci\u00f3n<\/a>\u201d group (TECFIR)<\/strong> from <strong>UNED<\/strong> with the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\"><strong>ITER<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\"><strong>Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)<\/strong><\/a>. The meeting venue was the Facultad de Educaci\u00f3n building at the UNED campus in Madrid, Spain, and the event gathered experts from around the world to discuss recent advances and future directions in fusion neutronics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the event\u2019s third day, <strong>Ezequiel<\/strong> presented the work &#8220;<em><strong>Neutron flux in IFMIF-DONES operation room: a comparison between Monte Carlo and deterministic codes.<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; The presentation focused on recent advancements in <a href=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/index.php\/2022\/09\/01\/evolution-and-validation-of-neutron-simulations-with-neutro-article-in-plasma-physics-and-controlled-fusion\/\"><strong>NEUTRO<\/strong><\/a>, the neutronics module of <strong>Alya<\/strong>, developed as part of the <strong>Alya4Fusion<\/strong> initiative. <strong>NEUTRO<\/strong> simulates neutron flux distribution and the resulting interactions with reactor materials, key to improving the accuracy and safety of fusion reactor designs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Alya4Fusion<\/strong> aims to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsc.es\/research-development\/research-areas\/engineering-simulations\/alya-high-performance-computational\"><strong>Alya<\/strong><\/a> the first unified, <strong>multiphysics<\/strong>, fully coupled <strong>simulation framework<\/strong> tailored for <strong>fusion reactors<\/strong>, optimised for high-performance computing (<strong>HPC<\/strong>) systems. By integrating modules developed by the Fusion Group, like NEUTRO, the initiative supports the <strong>development of comprehensive, predictive models for complex reactor environments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The opening of the meeting featured a noteworthy session with remarks by Ricardo Mairal Us\u00f3n, Rector of UNED, Subhash Puthanveetil from ITER, Michael Loughlin from ORNL, and Rafael Ju\u00e1rez from UNED. In his address, Dr. Puthanveetil stressed <strong>the importance of knowledge preservation, sharing, and peer review in scientific advancement<\/strong>. Dr. Loughlin reflected on <strong>the fusion neutronics community growth<\/strong>, with 29 years since the first meeting was held. He also emphasised <strong>the need to clearly define the community\u2019s research goals and obstacles to overcome<\/strong>. Dr. Mairal highlighted the <strong>increasing global energy demand and the vital role of fusion research<\/strong> in meeting future electricity needs, with worldwide efforts to develop nuclear fusion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92596\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92596\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92596 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250407_085754_low.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250407_085754_low.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/20250407_085754_low-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opening session at the main auditorium of the Facultad de Educaci\u00f3n building (UNED campus) where the meeting took place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conference proved to be a valuable opportunity for international collaboration, enabling in-person engagement with many of the world\u2019s leading fusion neutronics experts. The next meeting is scheduled to take place at KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) in 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Fusion Group would like to thank the TECFIR group and UNED for organising such a fruitful event.
