His work on numerical simulations of electromagnetic (EM) waves using the <strong>finite element method<\/strong> (FEM) in plasma environments, was presented to the steering committee of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.em-master-fusion.org\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">European Master of Science in Nuclear Fusion and Engineering Physics<\/a>, which awarded him with the mention <em>Tr\u00e8s Bien<\/em>, equivalent to outstanding distinctions.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92193\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-92193\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Imagen-de-WhatsApp-2024-09-21-a-las-21.24.38_eff99bd0-e1729175243377-400x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Imagen-de-WhatsApp-2024-09-21-a-las-21.24.38_eff99bd0-e1729175243377-400x297.jpg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Imagen-de-WhatsApp-2024-09-21-a-las-21.24.38_eff99bd0-e1729175243377-1024x760.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Imagen-de-WhatsApp-2024-09-21-a-las-21.24.38_eff99bd0-e1729175243377.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hern\u00e1n during his Master\u2019s Thesis defense.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His work, titled <em>&#8220;MAXWEL: FEM software module to compute EM fields within a magnetically confined fusion reactor&#8221;<\/em>, consists of the development of the software module <strong>MAXWEL<\/strong>, which is responsible for simulating wave propagation under a varied range of conditions and materials, such as isotropic or anisotropic dielectrics and <strong>cold plasma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The current state of the code allows the user to simulate this propagation under the presence of a plane wave or a finite source, solving the <strong>Helmholtz equation<\/strong> in two dimensions, either for an ordinary or extraordinary polarization. This Master&#8217;s Thesis was carried out as part of the mobility program and with the financial support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fusenet.eu\/\">FuseNet<\/a> association, whose funding made this work possible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-92192\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575-308x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575-308x400.jpg 308w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575-790x1024.jpg 790w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575-1184x1536.jpg 1184w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575-1579x2048.jpg 1579w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/portada_page-0001-scaled-e1729175789575.jpg 1809w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hern\u00e1n will continue his work within the group under a PhD program in <a href=\"https:\/\/doctorat.upc.edu\/en\/programmes\/nuclear-and-ionising-radiation-engineering?set_language=en\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuclear and Ionising Radiation Engineering<\/a>, tackling some relevant challenges such as migrating the code to the HPC framework Alya in MareNostrum 5, scaling the module to a 3D domain and implementing a hot plasma model to simulate the phenomena in a nuclear fusion reactor accurately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His progress, challenges, and future steps will be presented shortly at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpcfusion.bsc.es\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">5th Fusion HPC Workshop<\/a>. This online workshop covers all computer applications using HPC in the field of fusion research, and it is open to everyone.
