{"id":90892,"date":"2022-12-21T09:52:16","date_gmt":"2022-12-21T08:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/?p=90892"},"modified":"2022-12-21T10:41:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T09:41:29","slug":"3rd-fusion-hpc-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/index.php\/2022\/12\/21\/3rd-fusion-hpc-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd Fusion HPC Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-90891\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/zoom-background-e1671451060773.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/zoom-background-e1671451060773.png 1280w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/zoom-background-e1671451060773-400x199.png 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/zoom-background-e1671451060773-1024x509.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/hpcfusion.bsc.es\/\"><strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Fusion HPC Workshop<\/strong><\/a>, hosted by our Fusion group and sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fusioncat.es\">FusionCAT<\/a> project, was organized as<strong> an online event <\/strong>on <strong>December 15-16, 2022. <\/strong>As in the previous two editions in <a href=\"https:\/\/hpcfusion.bsc.es\/2020\/\">2020<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hpcfusion.bsc.es\/2021\/\">2021<\/a>, the workshop was devoted to <strong>computer applications<\/strong> using <strong>High Performance Computing<\/strong> (HPC) in the field of <strong>fusion research. <\/strong>This year, the workshop attracted a total of <strong>171 registrations from 41 countries<\/strong> all over the world.<!--more-->The workshop consisted of <strong>twenty-six presentations<\/strong>, including <strong>three keynote talks<\/strong>, <strong>four invited talks<\/strong> and <strong>nineteen contributions<\/strong> distributed in<strong> 7 sessions<\/strong> that covered topics such as Optimizations, Multiphysics, Advanced computing using accelerators, Turbulence in fusion plasmas, Atomistic simulations of fusion reactor materials and Magnetohydrodynamics. The three <strong>keynote speakers <\/strong>were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Flyura Djurabekova<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinki.fi\/en\">University of Helsinki<\/a>, gave a talk on Simulations following first principles and molecular dynamics for fusion materials.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Federico Felici<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/en\/\">\u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/a>, covered an interesting topic: controlling tokamaks using deep reinforcement learning.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Filippo Spiga<\/strong>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/\">NVIDIA<\/a>, exposed the last advances in GPU and possible applications for the acceleration of fusion simulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a <strong>novelty<\/strong> this year, the presenters in the <strong>early stages of their career received reviewer feedback<\/strong> from several expert senior researchers. The three <strong>highest-rated presentations<\/strong> given by <strong>Jes\u00fas Dom\u00ednguez-Palacios<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/\">EUROfusion<\/a>), <strong>Luke Humphrey<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/uk-atomic-energy-authority\">UKAEA<\/a>) and <strong>Jorge Su\u00e1rez Recio<\/strong> (UPM) received a special distinction and an award. Overall, the quality of the early-career presentations was very high, and the programme<strong> committee congratulates all the early career<\/strong> <strong>participants<\/strong> for their excellent presentations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90890\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-90890\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1.jpg 2515w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1-400x199.jpg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1-1024x511.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1-1536x766.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/collage-1-2048x1021.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A total of twenty-six presentations, divided into three keynote talks, four invited talks and nineteen contributed talks and distributed in 7 sessions were given at the workshop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Our Fusion group<\/strong> contributed with <strong>two presentations<\/strong> to this edition of the workshop. They included an invited talk given by <strong>Mart\u00ed Circuns i Duxans <\/strong>entitled <em>\u201cValidating NEUTRO, a deterministic finite element neutron transport solver for fusion applications, with literature tests, experimental benchmarks and other neutronic codes\u201d<\/em> and a contributed talk given by <strong>Xavier S\u00e1ez<\/strong> entitled <em>\u201cThe Advanced Computing Hub at BSC: improving fusion codes following the principles of EUROfusion standard software\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As in the previous two editions, the 3rd Fusion HPC Workshop gave experts in the fusion community working with HPC an excellent opportunity to show the state of their research and share their scientific results with colleagues around the world.
