She specializes in numerical modeling of MHD phenomena in fusion devices, helping to ensure that future reactors will operate efficiently. In one of her recent <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1741-4326\/ab9258\/pdf\">papers<\/a>, she and colleagues simulate instabilities observed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/w7x\">W7-X<\/a> stellarator if strong current is applied on the device\u2019s magnetic axis. Enjoy her take on science in the context of diplomacy in <a href=\"https:\/\/berlinscienceweek.com\/discover\/videos\/big-science-for-the-future-transatlantic-partnerships\/\">this<\/a> recorded panel discussion from the <a href=\"https:\/\/falling-walls.com\/science-summit-2021\/\">Falling Walls Science Summit<\/a> that took place in November of 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dr. Tammy Ma<\/strong> contributed to current, world-first, breakthrough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/u-s-project-reaches-major-milestone-toward-practical-fusion-power\/\">research<\/a> published in Nature this year titled, <em>\u201cBurning plasma achieved in inertial fusion\u201d.<\/em> Leading up to the latest achievement of burning plasma, in 2020 Dr. Ma gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XZB0ua4UXj8\">TEDx Talk<\/a> about progress at the<a href=\"https:\/\/lasers.llnl.gov\/\"> LLNL National Ignition Facility<\/a> towards sustainable fusion burn. In <a href=\"https:\/\/lasers.llnl.gov\/about\/who-works-at-nif\/people-profiles\/tammy-ma\">a 2014 interview<\/a>, Dr. Ma stated, \u201c<em>We\u2019re pushing new envelopes, so if something goes wrong we\u2019re not blaming each other; it\u2019s just physics, it\u2019s nature and that\u2019s what we&#8217;re trying to figure out. The only way you can do it is to work together. It\u2019s a huge team effort.<\/em>\u201d In 2016 Tammy Ma received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.org\/programs\/honors\/prizes\/stix.cfm\">APS Thomas H. Stix Award<\/a> for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research in part for quantifying hydrodynamic instability mix in inertial confinement fusion implosions. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.org\/programs\/honors\/prizes\/stix.cfm\">nominate<\/a> candidates until 1 April 2022 for this year&#8217;s edition of the award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dr. Min Liao<\/strong> serves as the Section Leader for magnets at the ITER Organization and was previously the youngest female division head at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.cnnc.com.cn\/2020-01\/14\/c_448104.htm\">Southwestern Institute of Physics in China<\/a>. Her team works on ITER\u2019s superconducting magnet system, which when completed will be the largest in the world. Magnets are critical to the shaping and control of the plasma inside a tokamak. Dr. Liao and colleagues broke down the current and future landscape of superconducting technology applied to fusion in <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1361-6668\/ac0992\/pdf\">this<\/a> paper. In addition to her technical work at ITER, Dr. Liao is an advocate for gender equity in fusion. She spoke about some of her strategies for promoting inclusivity at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/events\/fec-2020\">2020 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference<\/a>. Check out the recorded panel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LCybxJa-9_g\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dr. Katherine Weimer<\/strong> was a prolific scientist in the theory group at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pppl.gov\/\">Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory<\/a> and the first woman researcher in the lab\u2019s history. Her research focused on MHD equilibrium configurations, which helped inform the design of future axisymmetric fusion devices like tokamaks and stellarators. Check out her paper titled <a href=\"https:\/\/aip.scitation.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1063\/1.1693488\"><i>Tokamak Equilibrium<\/i><\/a>, where she and colleagues studied equilibria in the context of a novel heating scheme known as adiabatic compression. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aps.org\">American Physical Society<\/a> presents her namesake award every two years to an early-career woman physicist for <em>\u201coutstanding achievement in plasma science research\u201d<\/em>. You can nominate a candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.org\/programs\/women\/scholarships\/katherineweimer.cfm\">here<\/a> for this year&#8217;s edition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, we highlight <strong>Women leaders at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/\">International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) <\/a><\/strong>who shared their journeys in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/iaea-women-leaders-share-their-journeys-on-international-womens-day-2021-panel-discussion\">recorded panel discussion on International Women\u2019s Day 2021<\/a>. Panelists included <strong>Meera Venkatesh<\/strong>, <strong>Gabriele Voigt<\/strong>, <strong>Najat Mokhtar<\/strong>, and <strong>Elena Buglova<\/strong>, all barrier-breaking women in leadership positions at the IAEA.
