Credit: Department of Physics, Chalmers University of Technology, 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On January 14, our group leader<strong> Prof. Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong> had the honour of chairing the evaluation panel of <strong>Mathias Hoppe&#8217;s thesis<\/strong> entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/research.chalmers.se\/en\/publication\/?id=527630\">&#8220;Runaway-electron model development and validation in tokamaks&#8221;<\/a><\/em> at the <strong>Chalmers University of Technology<\/strong>, Gothenburg, Sweden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Super fast electrons, so called <em>&#8220;runaway electrons&#8221;<\/em>, can sometimes appear in fusion devices and can cause severe damage to the device wall. <strong>To develop technologies to prevent the generation of runaway electrons, advanced computer models<\/strong> accounting for all the relevant physics mechanisms playing a role in a fusion device are required, which constitutes the first part of Mathias Hoppe&#8217;s thesis. To ensure that the models are correct they must also be<strong> tested on the fusion experiments<\/strong> of today, which can be done using synchrotron radiation and the techniques developed in the second part of Mathias Hoppe&#8217;s thesis.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6906\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6906\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoppe_presenting-400x165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoppe_presenting-400x165.jpg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoppe_presenting.jpg 953w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mathias Hoppe giving his presentation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The thesis opponent was <strong>Dr. Philipp Lauber<\/strong> from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Garching, Germany and the other evaluation panel members were <strong>Prof. Boris Breizman<\/strong> from the University of Texas at Austin, USA, and <strong>Dr. Yueqiang Liu<\/strong> from General Atomics, California, USA. The thesis defense took place in a hybrid mode, with the opponent and the panel members joining virtually the event taking place in-person at Chalmers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event started with an introduction by Dr. Lauber to the topic of the thesis and was followed by a presentation by the candidate on the main results of his work. This was followed by questions by the opponent, the evaluation panel members and the audience.
