Comments, questions and constructive criticism were exchanged during the discussions, helping reach the overall conclusion that <strong>the FusionCAT project is progressing well and according to schedule<\/strong>. Each of the groups in the consortium achieved the technical objectives that were agreed upon, while at the same time participated in creating an active nuclear fusion community in Catalonia.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>FusionCAT<\/strong> is a collaborative EU-funded project that aims to boost the emerging sector of nuclear fusion in Catalonia, by combining the knowledge, resources and efforts of diverse institutions. It is a consortium formed by Foundation <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.btec.cat\/es\/fundacion-b_tec\">b_TEC Campus Diagonal-Bes\u00f2s<\/a> (BTEC), <a href=\"https:\/\/eurecat.org\/en\/eurecat\/\">Technology Centre of Catalonia<\/a> (EURECAT), Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqs.edu\/en\"> Chemical Institute of Sarri\u00e0<\/a> (IQS), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irec.cat\/\">Catalonia Institute for Energy Research<\/a> (IREC), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\">Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya<\/a> (UPC) and<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsc.es\"><strong>Barcelona Supercomputing Center<\/strong><\/a> (BSC), as the project coordinator and organizer of the <strong>FusionCAT Annual Meeting 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The meeting was held online via Zoom, and it started with a <strong>welcome by ICREA researcher, FusionCAT Coordinator and leader of the Fusion Group at BSC, Prof. Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong>. This was followed by a short round of presentations of the participants, an <strong>overview of the current status of the project by BSC Research Project Manager Ms Alba Abia,<\/strong> with news on the extension of the project untill the end of 2022, and a<strong> presentation of the status of technology transfer activities by Dr. Joan Farn\u00f3s (BSC)<\/strong>, who highlighted the importance of outreach to attract the industry sector. Thereafter, the meeting was divided into three consecutive sessions corresponding to the main FusionCAT <strong>research projects (P1, P2 and P3)<\/strong>. Each of them, in turn, was<strong> divided into several talks corresponding to their different tasks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>P1: Towards full fusion reactor integrated modelling<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>first project session, P1<\/strong>, was chaired by <strong>Mr Jordi Manyer<\/strong> (BSC). Each speaker had 10 minutes for a presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions. <strong>Dr Pedro Bonilla<\/strong> (BSC) began the presentations with a talk on the Development of fusion multiphysics HPC simulation capabilities, during which he pointed out a new ongoing collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kit.edu\/english\/\"><strong>Karlsruhe Institute of Technology<\/strong><\/a> (KIT). He was followed by <strong>Dr Dani Gallart<\/strong> (BSC) on the experimental evaluation and validation of fusion simulation codes, and <strong>Prof. Llu\u00eds Batet <\/strong>(ANT) expanded on the same topic. Dr Gallart noted the improvements on the diffusion coefficient operator within the PION code, better reproducing the experimental results, while Prof. Batet talked about creating data using OpenFOAM to train a neural network. Finally, <strong>Mr Tom\u00e1s Bensad\u00f3n<\/strong> (BSC) talked about PION integration with the European Transport Solver (ETS) inside the ITER Integrated Modelling and Analysis Suite (IMAS). The following speaker, <strong>Dr Jordi Abell\u00e0 <\/strong>(IQS), talked about the development of tritium and lithium sensors and fabrication of PbLi alloy. Thereafter,<strong> Dr Xavier Trias<\/strong> (UPC CTTC) and <strong>Mr Ronny Rives <\/strong>(UPC-ANT) discussed high-fidelity CFD simulation of liquid metal flows. They discussed the scaling of their models on 3 different supercomputers, Marenostrum (BSC) being one of them. <strong>Dr Xavier Vendrell<\/strong> (UPC-NEMEN) gave a presentation on the catalytic membrane reactors for hydrogen isotope recovery and fuel clean-up systems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6661\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6661\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2.1_leakage2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2.1_leakage2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2.1_leakage2-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2.1_leakage2-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2.1_leakage2.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ezequiel Goldberg (BSC) giving his talk on the development of high fidelity deterministic neutron transport modelling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>P3: Fusion reactor studies,<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The session on P3<\/strong>, chaired by <strong>Dr Xavier S\u00e1ez<\/strong> (BSC), started with presentations on HTS Magnets Development by <strong>Oriol Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> (BSC) and <strong>Mr Neil Lamas <\/strong>(ICMAB) followed by presentations of modelling, analysis and design of accelerator components for fusion materials research facilities by <strong>Mr<\/strong> <strong>Bipin Kumar<\/strong> (IREC) and <strong>Ms Raquel<\/strong> <strong>Busqu\u00e9<\/strong> and <strong>Mr Marc Crescenti<\/strong> (EURECAT). Thereafter, <strong>Mr Pau M\u00e1rquez<\/strong> talked about the dynamic modelling of supercritical CO2 power cycles for fusion nuclear power plants aimed at the design of Control Systems. <strong>Dr Julio Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong> (BSC) closed the presentations with a talk on large-scale modelling of fusion materials.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6667\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6667\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6667\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/julio_image-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/julio_image-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/julio_image-400x225.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/julio_image.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Julio Guti\u00e9rrez exposing next steps in Task 3.4.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, another 40 minutes were allocated for participants to take part in a general discussion. <strong>Prof. Batet<\/strong> pointed out that for the next project call we should start thinking about DEMO, not only ITER, and <strong>Dr Campbell<\/strong> said that some effort needs to be made to attract companies into the DEMO project, as it is not so attractive being a long term project.
