The topic of Tom\u00e1s&#8217; PhD research project is &#8220;<em>Analysis of ITER performance with different heating schemes using predictive integrated plasma modelling<\/em>&#8220;. The project is supervised by the group\u2019s leader <strong>ICREA Research Prof. Dr. Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong>, tutored by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\">UP<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\">C <\/a>Prof. Dr. Llu\u00eds Batet<\/strong> and funded by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/\">EUROfusion<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The presentation was attended and judged by the examination panel, which was formed by<strong> Prof. Dr. Shimpei Futatani<\/strong>, Associate Professor at UPC and researcher on Plasma Physics for fusion research, acting as President; <strong>Dr. Jer\u00f3nimo Garc\u00eda<\/strong> acting as Secretary; <strong>Dr. Mireille Schneider<\/strong>, Plasma Physicist at ITER and expert in integrated modelling and simulations of heating and current drive processes, as member of the panel. Dr. Mervi Mantsinen also attended the presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The presentation lasted 20 minutes, during which the candidate introduced some basic fusion concepts such as tokamaks, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\"><strong>International Thermonuclear Experimental reactor (ITER)<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Ion Cyclotron Radio Frequency (ICRF) heating<\/strong>. The objective of the project, using the heating code <strong>PION<\/strong> inside the <strong>European Transport Solver (ETS)<\/strong> to study and predict how the plasma transport will be affected when ICRF heating is applied to ITER plasmas, was also stated. In the methodology, the tools previously introduced were explained; PION as a fast, iterative ICRF modelling code, the ITER <strong>Integrated Modelling &amp; Analysis Suite (IMAS)<\/strong> as a platform supporting research activities and plasma operations at ITER and ETS as an integrated modelling workflow developed inside the IMAS framework.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6542\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/RP-defence-slide-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/RP-defence-slide-2.png 1830w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/RP-defence-slide-2-400x172.png 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/RP-defence-slide-2-1024x441.png 1024w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/RP-defence-slide-2-1536x662.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, the progress and results were presented. Here, <strong>the candidate showed results from two simulations carried out with a JET discharge and an ITER synthetic shot<\/strong>, illustrating said results with plots of the power density absorbed and the collisional power density transfer. The presentation was followed by some questions from the committee members, mainly regarding the integration of PION into the ETS and the inclusion of ICRF+NBI synergy and L-H transition modelling into the scope of the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the committee members discussed in a separate virtual room for a brief time, they communicated the candidate that <strong>his Research Proposal was satisfactory and that he was fit to continue with the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Research Proposal defence of the BSC fusion group\u2019s PhD student Tom\u00e1s Bensad\u00f3n took place on Wednesday 20th of October via Zoom.
