The term will be four years from summer 2021 to summer 2025, renewable by mutual agreement for a second four-year term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cIt is a honour and a recognition by many people to be selected for this position of trust, which involves taking part with an active and visible role in many top-level decisions in the field\u201d<\/em>, Mervi states.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The objective of the European Physical Society is to <strong>contribute to and promote the advancement of physic<\/strong>s, in Europe and in neighboring countries, by all suitable means and in particular by providing a forum for the discussion of subjects of common interest and by providing means whereby action can be taken on those matters which appear desirable to handle on the international level.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives of the EPS Plasma Physics Division (PPD) are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to <strong>unite European scientists<\/strong> interested in the physics of fully and partially ionized gases<\/li>\n<li>to <strong>promote research and teaching in plasma physics<\/strong> and its applications, to facilitate research collaboration and to represent European physicists outside Europe<\/li>\n<li>to <strong>coordinate activities<\/strong> with the other physical societies, such as the American Physical Society and the Physical Society of Japan<\/li>\n<li>to <strong>collaborate<\/strong> on the Editorial Board of <a title=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0741-3335\" href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/0741-3335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Plasma Physics Division is responsible for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/fusionwiki.ciemat.es\/wiki\/European_Physical_Society_Conference_on_Plasma_Physics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EPS Conference on Plasma Physics<\/a> and for granting several <a title=\"Awards\" href=\"http:\/\/fusionsites.ciemat.es\/eps\/awards\/\">Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to her present nomination, Mervi has collaborated with the PPD Board in the following roles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Local Organizing Committee Chair<\/strong>, 47th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, 2021.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Programme Committee Subchair<\/strong> of Magnetic Confinement Fusion Plasma, 45th EPS Conf.
