Held in Shizuoka, Japan, on 3\u20136 September 2019, this meeting brought together about 100 experts from nuclear fusion research sites worldwide to discuss the physics of energetic particles and plasma instabilities, at the first joint meeting from the two scientific disciplines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Special Issue contains<strong> the following three papers with contributions from our group <\/strong>related to heating fusion plasmas\u00a0 with electromagnetic waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iter.org\">ITER<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/devices\/jet\/\">JET<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First, the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1741-4326\/ab8ef6\"><strong>\u201cThe impact of anisotropy on ITER scenarios\u201d<\/strong><\/a> by M.J. Hole from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anu.edu.au\/\">Australian National University<\/a>, Australia reports on the impact of anisotropy to tokamak plasma configuration and stability, with focus on analysis of the impact of anisotropy on ITER pre-fusion power operation at a plasma current of 5 MA and a magnetic field of <em>B<\/em>\u2009=\u20091.8 T with ICRF heating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Second, the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1741-4326\/ab9256\"><strong>\u201cPlasma heating and generation of energetic D ions with the 3-ion ICRF + NBI scenario in mixed H-D plasmas at JET-ILW\u201d<\/strong><\/a> by Y.O. Kazakov (<a href=\"http:\/\/fusion.rma.ac.be\/\">Laboratory for Plasma Physics of the Ecole Royale Militaire \/ Koninklijke Militaire School<\/a>, Belgium) \u00a0discusses the three-ion ICRF + NBI synergetic scheme in H-D plasmas on JET. It shows that NBI ions can efficiently absorb the wave power at the mode conversion layer, where the wave polarization is particularly favourable for ion cyclotron heating through their Doppler-shifted resonance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1741-4326\/ab79cb\"><strong>\u201cExcitation of elliptical and toroidal Alfv\u00e9n eigenmodes by <sup>3<\/sup>He-ions of the MeV-energy range in hydrogen-rich JET plasmas\u201d<\/strong><\/a> by V.G. Kiptily (<a href=\"https:\/\/ccfe.ukaea.uk\/\">Culham Centre for Fusion Energy<\/a>, United Kingdom) shows that ellipticity-induced Alfv\u00e9n eigenmodes (EAEs) and toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) are excited by ICRF-generated <sup>3<\/sup>He ions of the MeV-energy range in hydrogen-rich JET discharges.
