(Source: ITER)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First-of-a-kind components have been arriving in recent months at the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iter.org\"> ITER<\/a> construction site in Cadarache, France<\/strong>, from the <strong>35 ITER member countries<\/strong> around the world. The arrival on July 21 of the first sector of the ITER vacuum vessel from South Korea marked <strong>the beginning of a four-and-a-half year machine assembly process for the world\u2019s largest tokamak<\/strong>, a magnetic fusion device designed to <strong>prove the feasibility of fusion as an energy source<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>On July 28<\/strong>, technical and civil leaders from ITER member countries<strong> celebrated the beginning of assembly with a global event<\/strong> hosted virtually by <strong>French President Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2-7GyVLKE6A\">livestreamed on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the host member for ITER, the <strong>European Union<\/strong> (with the United Kingdom and Switzerland) is <strong>funding 45 percent of the project\u2019s cost<\/strong>. Each of the <strong>other members\u2014the United States, China, Japan, Russia, India, and South Korea\u2014is contributing 9 percent<\/strong>. Many of the components arriving in France are being provided as<strong> in-kind contributions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Buildings and civil works<\/strong> across the ITER site are the responsibility of Europe and are about<strong> 75 percent complete<\/strong>. The <strong>Tokamak Building and Assembly Hall<\/strong> have been completed and are <strong>linked by a 170-meter overhead crane rail supporting two 750-ton cranes that will transport and position components<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Assembling ITER is the responsibility of the central ITER organization.<\/strong> The work includes the assembly of the tokamak itself, as well as the parallel installation of support systems such as radio frequency heating, fuel cycle, cryogenics, cooling water, vacuum, control, and high voltage electrical systems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5254\" style=\"width: 322px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5254\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bigot-Bernard-ITER-e1596703521386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bigot-Bernard-ITER-e1596703521386.jpg 530w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bigot-Bernard-ITER-e1596703521386-318x400.jpg 318w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ITER director-general Bernard Bigot. (Source: ITER)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cConstructing the machine piece by piece will be<strong> like assembling a three-dimensional puzzle on an intricate timeline<\/strong>,\u201d said <strong>Bernard Bigot, director-general of the ITER Organization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEvery aspect of project management, systems engineering, risk management, and logistics of the machine assembly must perform together with the precision of a Swiss watch,\u201d Bigot said. \u201cWe have a complicated script to follow over the next few years.\u201d At the <strong>completion of machine assembly, scheduled for December 2025<\/strong>, ITER scientists and engineers plan to demonstrate the machine\u2019s function by initiating \u201cFirst Plasma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Principal assembly activities will take place in the Tokamak Building<\/strong>, where the ITER device will be installed in a partially embedded concrete bioshield.<strong> The circular tokamak will be preassembled in nine subassemblies in the adjacent Assembly Hall<\/strong>. Each <strong>40-degree section<\/strong> will integrate <strong>a vacuum vessel sector, a protective silver-coated thermal shield, and two toroidal field coils.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"leadin\">The burning goal:<\/span> <strong>ITER is expected to produce about 500 MWt<\/strong>, which would translate to about 200 MWe if the plant were operated continuously and connected to the electric grid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the tokamak, a few grams of <strong>deuterium and tritium will be heated to a cloud-like ionized plasma, shaped by 10,000 tons of superconducting magnets<\/strong>. Fusion would occur when the plasma reaches <strong>150 million \u00b0C<\/strong> \u2014 10 times hotter than the core of the sun\u2014releasing a huge amount of energy transmitted as heat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ITER is expected to be the first to achieve a \u201cburning,\u201d or self-heating, plasma.<\/strong> A potential commercial fusion plant would use the released heat energy to generate electricity using a steam turbine.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ans.org\/news\/article-394\/assembly-of-iter-begins-in-southern-france\/\">ANS<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First-of-a-kind components have been arriving in recent months at the ITER construction site in Cadarache, France, from the 35 ITER member countries around the world.
