Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifmif.org\/?page_id=122\">ifmif.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On May 20<sup>th<\/sup>, our Fusion Group co-organized, as part of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsc.es\/research-and-development\/projects\/fusioncat-fusion-catalonia\">FusionCAT<\/a><\/strong> project that we are coordinating, a <a href=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/200520_DONES-v0.pdf\"><strong>webinar on the\u00a0DEMO Oriented Neutron Source (DONES)<\/strong><\/a> project given by<strong> Dr \u00c1ngel Ibarra<\/strong>, the Director of the Division for Fusion Technologies at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fusion.ciemat.es\/home\/\">Laboratorio Nacional de Fusi\u00f3n<\/a>, <strong>CIEMAT<\/strong>, Madrid (Spain) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\"><strong>EUROfusion<\/strong><\/a><strong> Work Package Early Neutron Source Definition and Design<\/strong> Project Leader.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his talk, which attracted a total of <strong>113 participants<\/strong> with a variety of backgrounds and profiles from several countries, \u00c1ngel discussed the <strong>background of the project together with its present status and near-future plans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/33wqXtZ6bcg?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A high intensity fusion-like neutron source for the qualification of materials has been identified for a long time as a key step for fusion reactor development, and it forms an important part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/eurofusion\/roadmap\/\">European Research Roadmap to the Realisation of Fusion Energy<\/a>. The targeted environment needs to be similar to the one in a fusion reactor in order <strong>to drive the design and the licensing of the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/programme\/demo\/\">Demonstration Reactor<\/a> (DEMO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the European level, this need has pushed the development of a <strong>neutron source based on the Li(d,nx) stripping reaction<\/strong> called <a href=\"https:\/\/ifmifdones.org\/\">DONES<\/a> (DEMO Oriented Neutron Source). The mission of DONES is to provide a neutron source that <strong>produces high-energy neutrons at sufficient intensity and irradiation volume in order to generate materials irradiation test data for design, licensing, construction, and safe operation of DEMO<\/strong> as well as a data base for <strong>benchmarking of radiation responses of materials hand in hand with computational material science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4908\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4908\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/ifmifp3-400x219.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/ifmifp3-400x219.png 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/ifmifp3.png 967w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifmif.org\/?page_id=6\">ifmif.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Future reactors first wall conditions will be simulated by means of two parallel deuteron accelerators.<\/strong> In each of them, a 100 keV deuteron beam will be produced at an electron cyclotron resonance ion source. A first Low-Energy Beam-Transport (LEBT) section is intended to guide the beam to a Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ) system, which will bunch and accelerate the beam to 5 MeV. The output will be injected through a Medium-Energy Beam-Transport (MEBT) and then transferred to a superconducting radiofrequency linear accelerator, where it will reach the final <strong>energy of 40 MeV<\/strong>. Finally, the High-Energy Beam-Transport (HEBT) line will guide the beam to the target and shape it to have a<strong> cross section of 200mm x 50mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 125 mA deuteron beam will impinge on a liquid helium target 25 mm thick and 260 mm wide, cross-flowing at 15 m\/s in front of it. The resulting D-Li reactions will generate a <strong>neutron flux of up to 5 x 10<sup>8<\/sup> m<sup>-2<\/sup>s<sup>-1<\/sup><\/strong> that will interact with around <strong>1000 small material samples<\/strong> located immediately behind the helium target <strong>in a volume of around 0.5 l<\/strong>.
