Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qst.go.jp\">QST<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>After more than 8 hectic years, the assembly of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jt60sa.org\/b\/index.htm\">JT-60SA<\/a><\/strong> fusion device is finally complete. This achievement is a <strong>major milestone<\/strong> that brings the <strong>world\u2019s currently largest superconducting<\/strong> <strong>tokamak <\/strong>ready for operation. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\"><strong>EUROfusion<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong>Fusion Energy Forum of Japan<\/strong> have led the JT-60SA project to build a tokamak able to confine <strong>100 million degree<\/strong> plasmas. The facility of the Japanese-European tokamak is located at <strong>Naka<\/strong> (Japan) under the auspices of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qst.go.jp\/\">National Institute for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology<\/a> (QST) which has operated various tokamaks such as <strong>JT-60<\/strong> or <strong>JT-60U<\/strong> since 1985.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JT-60SA <strong>will start its operation later this year<\/strong> diving into the study of hydrogen and deuterium plasmas in support to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\">ITER<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/programme\/demo\/\">DEMO<\/a> preparation. The mission is to <strong>produce steady-state scenarios at high beta and density<\/strong> that will make key contributions to the understanding of plasma physics. During ITER&#8217;s operation, JT-60SA will have the role of an <strong>ITER-satellite tokamak<\/strong> due to its relevance for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/index.php?id=61&amp;L=634\"> the fusion energy roadmap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4830\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4830\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/jt-60sa-sketch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"519\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JT-60SA concept design with a human next to it as an indicating of the scale of the device. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qst.go.jp\">QST<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JT-60SA is a major engineering achievement on its own. <strong>Its central solenoid is one of the largest coils in the world.<\/strong> With 2.1m in diameter, 9.5m in height and 100 tons in weight, it is able to produce a <strong>10T magnetic field<\/strong>. The vacuum vessel weighs <strong>~300 tons and its diameter is 10m and its height is 6.2m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding the components that heat the plasma, there are two neutral beam injection (NBI) methods, <strong>P-NBI<\/strong> (<strong>24 MW<\/strong> at 85 keV) and <strong>N-NBI<\/strong> (<strong>10 MW<\/strong> at 500 keV).
