Source: IPP.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last week, 3-7 June 2019, our group leader <strong>Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong> worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/2285\/en\">Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics <\/a>(IPP) at Garching, Germany where she participated in the experimental campaign on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/16195\/asdex\">ASDEX Upgrade <\/a><\/strong>tokamak as part of the 2019 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/\">EUROfusion<\/a> Medium Size Tokamak (MST1) campaigns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"more-1872\"><\/span>The MST1 Task Force coordinates European joint experiments\u00a0of the medium sized tokamaks, i.e. ASDEX Upgrade at IPP, Garching, Germany; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccfe.ac.uk\/mast_upgrade_project.aspx\">MAST Upgrade<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccfe.ac.uk\/index.aspx\">CCFE<\/a>, Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, United Kingdom; and <a href=\"http:\/\/spc.epfl.ch\/research_TCV_Tokamak\">TCV<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/\">CRPP<\/a>, Lausanne, Switzerland.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The experiments last week continued the experiments that <a href=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/index.php\/2019\/02\/08\/research-stay-with-experiments-on-aug\/\">Mervi coordinated earlier this year<\/a> at ASDEX Upgrade to accelerate ions with externally applied waves to high energies. One of the main aims of these experiments is to <strong>develop a new way on ASDEX Upgrade to study the effects of fast-ion driven instabilities and turbulence on fast ion confinement<\/strong>. The confinement\u00a0of fast ions is a key issue for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\">ITER<\/a> where the hot temperature of the fusion fuels needs to be sustained by fusion-born high-energy alpha particles.
