This news reinforces the link between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsc.es\">Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)<\/a> and EUROfusion in the fusion research as an energy source.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within the Work Package Infrastructure Support Activities (ISA), <strong>the High Level Support Team (HLST) provides support to scientists performing massively parallel computational work for the European fusion programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-345\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-345\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/team3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/team3.jpg 1844w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/team3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/team3-1024x684.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xavier S\u00e1ez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>HLST members are HPC experts with a background in developing large scientific applications and particular expertise in numerical algorithms<\/strong>. Its mission consists of the following tasks:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Parallelise codes using, e.g. Open MP and\/or MPI standards for massively parallel computers;<\/li>\n<li>Improve the performance of existing parallel codes both at the single node and inter-node levels;<\/li>\n<li>Support the transfer of codes to new multiprocessor architectures;<\/li>\n<li>Identify and, if necessary, adapt algorithms and\/or mathematical library routines to improve applications for the targeted computer architectures;<\/li>\n<li>Provide feedback to the community based on experience gained from specific project works;<\/li>\n<li>Guide young scientists on available training activities in HPC and towards upcoming new computer architectures;<\/li>\n<li>Provide consultancy to scientists within the Research Units working on HPC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to fulfill its mission, the HLST is currently composed of a core team of six full-time staff based at IPP Garching (Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Plasmaphysik) complemented by two part-time staff and one full-time staff distributed amongst other Research Units.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Xavier is a member of HLTS as part-time staff since 2014, and with this appointment, he renews his position until 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are delighted to announce that Xavier S\u00e1ez from our Fusion Group has been selected as a High Level Support Team (HLST) member by the General Assembly of EUROfusion after a call for candidates that was issued in March.
