The aim of the conference was to share the current status of fusion world wide. The speakers gave an overview on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iter.org\">ITER<\/a> construction\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fusionforenergy.europa.eu\/understandingfusion\/demo.aspx\">DEMO<\/a>\u00a0design and as well as present status and progress on a wide variety of fusion reactor topics.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2260 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20170926_031815616-e1508161254403.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2442\" height=\"1302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20170926_031815616-e1508161254403.jpg 2442w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20170926_031815616-e1508161254403-400x213.jpg 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20170926_031815616-e1508161254403-1024x546.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2442px) 100vw, 2442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our Fusion group member<strong> <em>Dr Albert Guti\u00e9rrez <\/em><\/strong>participated in the\u00a0conference and presented a poster entitled &#8220;<em>New High Performance Computing Software for Multiphysics Simulations of Fusion Reactors<\/em>&#8220;. The poster\u00a0introduced\u00a0the HPC mechanical code <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsc.es\/research-development\/research-areas\/engineering-simulations\/alya-high-performance-computational\">Alya<\/a>\u00a0to the fusion\u00a0community as well as presented a new neutronics code within this tool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is well known that fusion reactor modelling requires significant computing\u00a0resources. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/2016\/09\/a-computing-power-house-to-start-in-italy\/\">Marconi-Fusion <\/a>supercomputer of EUROfusion is\u00a0<strong>the 14th most powerful supercomputer<\/strong> in the world and dedicated solely for fusion simulations. Significant resources are required since the design of new fusion reactors demands analysis and modelling of its components as well as the plasma behaviour,\u00a0which requires the power of thousands of CPUs working together.
