Source: Institute of Plasma Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ipp.cas.cn\/syxw\/201707\/t20170705_179369.html\">Institute of Plasma Physics<\/a> at Chinese Academy of Sciences have\u00a0set a new <strong>world record in fusion by achieving 101.2 seconds <span class=\"bdy\">in the so-called H-mode confinement regime <\/span><\/strong>in a fusion reactor on the<span class=\"bdy\">\u00a03rd of July<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The experiment was conducted <strong>on <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ipp.cas.cn\/rh\/east\/\">Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) reactor<\/a><\/strong> at the Institute of Physical Science in Hefei, China. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EAST\u00a0tokamak\u00a0was able to <strong>heat plasma to about 50 million Celsius<\/strong>, that&#8217;s more than three times as hot as the core of the sun, for over 100 seconds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2154\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2154\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2154\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/shot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/shot.png 2206w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/shot-400x286.png 400w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/shot-1024x732.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The record-breaking shot. Source: Hefei Institute of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sustaining these incredibly high temperatures for long enough to harness the energy produced by the reaction is key to achieving controlled nuclear fusion.\u00a0Moreover,\u00a0a stable alignment of the magnetic fields that are used to manoeuvre the plasma away from the walls of the machine is required\u00a0together with\u00a0the collection of high-energy particles and heat energy that are produced as part of the reaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China is a member country of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\">International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project<\/a>, therefore <strong>data from their experiment may be of use to ITER<\/strong> that is now under construction in France.
