Source: IPP.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This week our group leader <strong>Mervi Mantsinen<\/strong> has worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/2285\/en\">Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics <\/a>(IPP) at Garching, Germany where she has participated in the experimental campaign on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipp.mpg.de\/16195\/asdex\">ASDEX Upgrade <\/a><\/strong>tokamak as part of the 2017 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/\">EUROfusion<\/a> Medium Size Tokamak (MST1) campaigns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MST1 Task Force coordinates European joint experiments\u00a0of the medium sized tokamaks, i.e. ASDEX Upgrade at IPP, Garching, Germany; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccfe.ac.uk\/mast_upgrade_project.aspx\">MAST Upgrade<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccfe.ac.uk\/index.aspx\">CCFE<\/a>, Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, United Kingdom; and <a href=\"http:\/\/spc.epfl.ch\/research_TCV_Tokamak\">TCV<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/\">CRPP<\/a>, Lausanne, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before her visit to IPP, Mervi predicted by numerical computer simulations how to accelerate ions with externally applies waves to high energies for AUG experiments conducted within MST1\u00a0High Level Topic 14. This Topic <strong>studies the effect of fast-ion driven instabilities and turbulence on current drive and fast ion transport<\/strong>. The interplay\u00a0of fast ions with instabilities and turbulence is a key issue for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/\">ITER<\/a> due to the presence of fusion-born high-energy alpha particles. Topic 14 was allocated 6 discharges on AUG this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During her stay at IPP, Mervi also organized and chaired a MST1 <strong>fast ion modelling coordination task meeting<\/strong>.
