{"id":1765,"date":"2017-03-28T08:20:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T06:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/?p=1765"},"modified":"2017-03-28T08:20:14","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T06:20:14","slug":"farewell-to-helios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/index.php\/2017\/03\/28\/farewell-to-helios\/","title":{"rendered":"Farewell to Helios"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1767\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1767\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1767 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/helios.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/helios.png 750w, https:\/\/fusion.bsc.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/helios-400x236.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helios supercomputer <em>(photo: Bull)<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u00a0is\u00a0time to say goodbye to the <strong>Helios supercomputer<\/strong> located in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iferc.org\/\">International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC)<\/a> in Rokkasho, Japan, hosted by the Japanese Atomic Energy Authority (JAEA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>From 2011 to 2016 Helios was one of the world\u2019s most powerful supercomputers<\/strong> with a peak performance of more than 1.5 Petaflop\/s.\u00a0Its main goal was to give scientists the opportunity to perform complex calculations in plasma physics.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Helios was used by the fusion communities of Europe and Japan to research in plasma physics, reactor technologies and materials.<\/strong> The usage of Helios was very intense, exceeding at times 98% capacity on average\/week.\u00a0 Some of the highlight achievements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Comparisons between fusion experiments such as JET, JT-60U, ASDEX-Upgrade, MAST, Tore Supra, W7X, LHD and Heliotron J.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Predictive simulations of future devices were run such as JT-60SA and ITER.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">639 peer-reviewed papers as a result of the computational research that has been carried out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Earlier this year, the mission of Helios was completed as all\u00a0its shut-down operations were finished. After Helios farewell, scientific work in the fusion field continues with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro-fusion.org\/2016\/09\/a-computing-power-house-to-start-in-italy\/\">Marconi-Fusion<\/a> supercomputer <\/strong>that Europe has made available\u00a0for the next two years.
