Fusion Group joins local students at first-ever CASE Open Day

Thirty students from Barcelona universities joined researchers from BSC’s Computer Applications of Science and Engineering (CASE) department in late November to discuss opportunities at the BSC and in science and engineering more broadly at the first edition of CASE Open Day.

The goal of the event, organized by the CASE department equality commission Equity4CASE, was two-fold: first, to engage with local students and encourage them to apply for positions at the BSC upon graduating, and to promote and give visibility to the work of women researchers within the CASE department.

DEMO Prospective R&D Workshop looks ahead to opportunities and challenges in fusion industrialization

In early October, group members Ezequiel Goldberg and Adriana Ghiozzi attended the second biannual DEMO Prospective Research and Development Workshop hosted by EPFL and organized by EUROfusion.

DEMO, or the DEMOnstration fusion power plant, refers to fusion devices to be developed post-ITER which, unlike ITER, will be connected to the electric grid and demonstrate net power production in a closed fuel cycle. Broadly, the goal of the workshop was to identify and discuss the current technical, engineering, and economic gaps between a DEMO device and a future fleet of fully-industrialized electricity-producing fusion devices.

Private fusion industry is growing in both investment and confidence, says FIA’s 2022 Annual Report

The Fusion Industry Association (FIA), a non-profit advocacy organization representing nearly 30 fusion start-ups, released its second annual report on the state of the global fusion industry this July. The report provides an update on the milestones achieved in the last year by each of 33 companies surveyed as well as an aggregated picture of growth in the industry as a whole using data collected from the companies.

Plasma community celebrates a year of fusion breakthroughs at 48th EPS Plasma Conference

Fusion Group members Tomas Bensadon and Adriana Ghiozzi participated in the 48th edition of the European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics. The event was held online due to continued concerns about the pandemic but featured a lively and fruitful dialogue nevertheless, with 612 attendees joining from countries both within and outside of Europe.

Inaugural EPS Forum brings together young researchers from across Europe

This past week BSC Fusion was well-represented by Adriana Ghiozzi and Tomás Bensadon at the first-ever edition of the European Physical Society (EPS) Forum held in Paris, France. The event sought to promote collaboration and career development among young researchers, and stimulate economic recovery in technical sectors following the Covid-19 pandemic. The Forum featured a two-day lineup of plenary talks, panel discussions and poster sessions relevant to each of the EPS divisions and groups.
